Dry Needling

Targeted Treatment for Muscle Pain, Trigger Points, and Movement Dysfunction

Dry needling is an evidence-based treatment technique used to reduce pain, improve mobility, and restore normal muscle function. It involves the insertion of a thin, sterile needle into muscles and connective tissue to target trigger points and areas of muscle dysfunction.

At Foundation Physical Therapy, dry needling is never a stand-alone treatment. It is used when appropriate as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that may also include hands-on therapy, therapeutic exercise, movement retraining, and education to help you recover efficiently and prevent your symptoms from returning.

What Can Dry Needling Help Treat?

Dry needling may be beneficial for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

Your physical therapist will determine whether dry needling is appropriate based on your condition, symptoms, and overall treatment goals.

How Does Dry Needling Work?

When muscles become irritated or overworked, they can develop tight bands of tissue known as trigger points. These areas may contribute to pain, stiffness, weakness, or reduced movement.

Dry needling helps stimulate the body's natural healing response, reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow, and restore normal muscle function. Many patients notice improved movement and decreased pain shortly after treatment.

Is Dry Needling the Same as Acupuncture?

No.

Although both techniques use similar needles, their purpose and philosophy are different.

Dry needling is based on modern anatomy, biomechanics, and evidence-based physical therapy principles. Treatment is directed toward muscles, tendons, connective tissue, and movement dysfunction identified during your physical therapy evaluation.

Acupuncture is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine and focuses on restoring the flow of energy through specific meridians within the body.

Does Dry Needling Hurt?

Most patients tolerate dry needling very well.

Because the needles are extremely thin, many people feel little or no discomfort when the needle is inserted. You may experience a brief muscle twitch, mild aching, or soreness during or after treatment, which typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours.

Your therapist will explain the procedure, answer your questions, and ensure you are comfortable before treatment begins.

Is Dry Needling Safe?

Yes.

When performed by a properly trained physical therapist, dry needling is considered a safe and effective treatment technique.

Foundation Physical Therapy follows strict safety procedures, including the use of sterile, single-use needles and evidence-based clinical practices.

Before treatment, we'll discuss your medical history and determine whether dry needling is appropriate for you.
