Why Cash-Based Physical Therapy Can Cost Less

At first glance, paying directly for physical therapy may seem more expensive than using insurance. In reality, many patients find that a cash-based approach can lower their overall healthcare costs while providing more personalized care.

The question isn't simply, "What does one visit cost?" It's, "What will it cost to get better?"

Can I Still Use My Insurance?

Absolutely—depending on your insurance plan. Many patients are surprised to learn that their insurance may still help pay for physical therapy—even if Foundation Physical Therapy is out of network.

Foundation Physical Therapy operates as a hybrid practice. While many services are provided on a self-pay basis, some patients may still qualify for reimbursement from their insurance company.

After your visit, we can provide a superbill—an itemized receipt containing the information your insurance company may require for reimbursement. Many out-of-network plans offer reimbursement for physical therapy services, although benefits vary by plan.

Because every insurance policy is different, we encourage you to contact your insurance carrier to ask about your out-of-network physical therapy benefits before your appointment.

Fewer Visits. Better Results.

Traditional insurance-based physical therapy often follows standardized treatment plans with patients scheduled two or three times each week.

At Foundation Physical Therapy, treatment frequency is determined by your condition, your goals, and your progress—not by insurance expectations.

Through individualized treatment, education, and personalized home exercise programs, many patients achieve excellent results with fewer visits.

Know Your Costs Up Front

  • No surprise bills.

  • No contractual rules.

  • No confusing Explanation of Benefits (EOBs).

  • No wondering what insurance will or won't cover.

  • You'll know the cost of your care before treatment begins, allowing you to make informed decisions about your health.

You're Investing in Wellness—Not Just Appointments

Our goal isn't to schedule as many visits as possible.

Our goal is to identify the source of your problem, develop an effective treatment plan, and give you the tools to become independent.

That means every visit should provide value and move you closer to your goals.

Save More Than Therapy Costs

Effective physical therapy may help reduce the need for:

  • Additional physician visits

  • Expensive imaging when it isn't necessary

  • Prescription medications

  • Emergency department visits for many musculoskeletal injuries

  • Unnecessary specialist appointments

When appropriate, we'll also let you know when further medical evaluation is needed.

Insurance Isn't Always "Free"

Many patients assume that using insurance means paying less.

Depending on your plan, you may still be responsible for:

  • High deductibles

  • Copays for every visit

  • Coinsurance

  • Facility fees

  • Services that are uncovered

In some cases, those costs can add up to as much—or even more—than paying directly, especially if a cash-based approach helps you recover in fewer visits.

Medicare & MaineCare

Foundation Physical Therapy is also building a hybrid model to serve our community.

  • Medicare beneficiaries can receive covered physical therapy services in accordance with Medicare guidelines.

  • Pediatric concussion and vestibular patients may be eligible to use MaineCare.

Our goal is to provide patients with flexible options while preserving the individualized, one-on-one care that defines Foundation Physical Therapy.

Our Promise

We'll never recommend more treatment than you need.

Every recommendation is based on your condition, your goals, and your progress—not on maximizing insurance reimbursement.

Because your recovery—not your visit count—is our measure of success.
